Often when a church calculates their greenhouse gas emissions, they look at the church building itself. But what about the cost of fossil fuels it took to get to church?
Trinity Lutheran in Fort Collins, in tandem with its ecumenical building partners, set out to change the culture of getting to church. They host a regular “bike to church” day. In addition, they’ve expanded their infrastucture to accomodate bikes and walking with bike rack and a bike accessible trail on property.
Other changes their creation care ministry put into practice include:
- Adding recycling bins
- “Eco-tips” in the newsletter
- a creation care bulletin board
- Celebrating Creation Care Service in Fall, as well as ecumenical creation care service with our faith partners
- field trips to learn about environmental topics
- Replanting Sky Ranch, a Lutheran outdoor ministry after a forest fire
