Christ the King in Elgin hosts a “Monarch Sunday” to celebrate their Monarch Butterfly neighbors neighbors and their status as a Monarch waystation– a place that can sustain monarch butterflies on their migration with habitat.
But Christ the King’s impact isn’t just on our butterfly friends– their love of Creation requires change from humans, too. The congregation has switched to re-usable plates/cups/mugs, and has washable napkins and towels for fellowship and events. Water bottles are no longer allowed and congregants are encouraged to use their own re-usable water bottles. Recycling has increased as education about recycling/garbage has become more obvious. The congregation also offers pill bottle recycling.
It’s not all about the “no-no’s.” This church finds many ways to bring joy into creation care. They encourage members to commit to personal “green habits” by offering a raffle for those who did, and they won a congregation-made quilt. There’s also fun “No waste potlucks” where participants are challenged to bring the tools they need and pack everything they brought with them.
What next?
All this work has been done over the past 2.5 years, so congregants will be rewarded for their green work with an ice cream party with compostable materials left over.
