Edina, Hopewell, Monongalia, Delaware, Osage, Mohawk & Seneca/Cuyoga. 00:32:50 Phoebe Morad (she/her) - Lutherans Restoring Creation: http://www.emiliebouvier.com/ 00:34:01 Donna P: Donna Pellegrin, Southwest Ohio. Adena, Hopewell, Waskanzani, Miami, Shawnee. 00:34:38 Phoebe Morad (she/her) - Lutherans Restoring Creation: WELCOME JACK!!! 00:36:48 Janet Farness: It's a miracle that we can come together like this from across the country! Grateful for the technology! 00:37:24 Lynn Perry: Yes Janet! 00:38:21 Janet Farness: Love Holden!!!! 00:38:22 Phoebe Morad (she/her) - Lutherans Restoring Creation: yes & so much better than overhead projectors! 00:38:44 Lynn Perry: Indeed Phoebe! 00:39:59 Phoebe Morad (she/her) - Lutherans Restoring Creation: If you think of questions feel free to add them to the chat and start with Q: so I can scroll through to see after Emilie shares (-: 00:41:05 Dave Brauer-Rieke: Interesting that Holden's power was so different 2000-2005 and 2019-2021. Less water is consistent with climate change induced drought in the PNW over the last few decades. 00:42:12 Donna P: I'd like to know what an "intentional community" is. 00:47:27 Mark Carlson: Great to see this work. I was hired by SW KS corn irrigators to oppose the Sunflower (Generation and Transmission Co-Op) Holcomb Unit 1 in 1979-80. Working with Wes Jackson at the Land Institute, we hosted Amory Lovins in Garden City. The proposed Unit 2 has been abandoned, was initially denied a use permit based on CO2 emissions by the K. Sebelius administration, first in the country to be denied based on CO2. Holcomb 1 chugs away on Powder River coal. I am also interested in the future of the coal-fired Tri-State Generating Station, a generation/transmission co-op, in Craig, CO. We are cheering in CA that we now have enough precipitation to restart the hydro generators at the huge Oroville Dam, the centerpiece source for the California Water Project, Feather River watershed. Yay microgrids! Great presentation! 00:48:44 Robert Errett He/Him: Will renewable power be able to replace the current methods of power creation economically. 00:49:02 Jim Martin-Schramm: Donna, I think intentional communities are mission-driven entities. They have a clear sense of their mission and strive to live it out. Congregations, at their best, are intentional communities. 00:49:25 Janet Farness: Shareholders may not live anywhere near the neighborhood that is burdened with creating the power. 00:51:01 Jim Martin-Schramm: Robert, some renewables (wind and solar) are less expensive to install than conventional sources like coal, nuclear, and gas. See:https://www.lazard.com/perspective/levelized-cost-of-energy-levelized-cost-of-storage-and-levelized-cost-of-hydrogen/ 00:52:15 Lisa Brenskelle: Bob - renewable generation is already the cheapest option for new energy generation. A recent analysis showed clearly that coal-fired power plants are generally losing money now. 00:52:55 Janet Farness: In Washington, our last coal-fired power plant has now been replaced by the state's largest solar array. 00:52:57 Robert Errett He/Him: Thank you. I'm entrusted with the investments at my church. Power companies are always good investments, however, I've been looking for a good replacement for them in our portfolio. 00:53:15 Jim Martin-Schramm: Here’s a link to a similar map of the electric service territories in Iowa: https://iowa.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=d595a7d431bc4c789065348a8f454dbb 00:54:30 Phoebe Morad (she/her) - Lutherans Restoring Creation: I will post this chat log as well on our follow up LRC post 00:55:01 Dave Brauer-Rieke: Oregon also phased out our last coal fired plant recently. Like Washington we are blessed by lots of hydro from the Columbia River as well as wind energy up and down the river gorge. 00:56:17 Leslie Sand: The Grid by Gretchen Bakke https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/26073005-the-grid 00:57:33 Robert Errett He/Him: Following the money is easier with municipal utility organizations. Utilities do not have the same need for openness. 00:58:51 Lynn Perry: Q1: How do you handle the argument that we would need to build mass amounts of wind farms and solar farms to generate the same amount of power as a few power plants, and they would use much more land? 00:59:50 Lynn Perry: Q2: There is quite the discussion going on in New Jersey about off-shore wind farms and the impact on the sea life. Opponents feel not enough research has been done. Thoughts? 01:03:08 Lisa Brenskelle: Interesting article on land use & renewables: https://www.brookings.edu/research/renewables-land-use-and-local-opposition-in-the-united-states/ 01:03:21 Wilbur Holz: NPR recently did a piece about plants doing better under solar panels in answer to Q1. https://www.npr.org/2021/11/14/1054942590/solar-energy-colorado-garden-farm-land 01:04:29 Mark Carlson: We in CA are blessed in summer heat by the PNW hydro, but as I flip the switch In always try to remember the price tribes paid in the loss of salmon and culture to dams. This March will be the 65th anniversary of The Dalles Dam drowning Celilo Falls. My father, pastor at Central in Yakima, took our family there and said never to forget it. There is a YouTube video of the new NPS Director, Chuck Says, (Cayuse and Walla Walla of the Confederated Umatilla) at Celilo Park, next to the calm water backed up behind The Dalles. 01:05:13 Sharon Samoska: Connecticut is very far behind many states in dealing with energy. I am told Eversource does not generate electricity on its own, but buys from surrounding states putting us as I view this at a significant disadvantage and a worrisome one. 01:05:13 Mark Carlson: Chuck Sams III National Park Service Director, elections make a difference. 01:06:02 Lisa Brenskelle: Research that specifically addresses land use and energy: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5015902/ 01:06:52 Lisa Brenskelle: Considers not only footprint of power plant but footprint of mining/extraction operations. 01:08:24 Sharon Samoska: In this region of CT while we have some solar, there is reticence to do this on a large scale even though there are sites in both city and rural that would be good choices. 01:09:22 Dennis Groce: Has the problem of wind turbine interference with wildlife been solved? 01:09:46 Sharon Samoska: PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY I HAVE HEARD THAT WHEN INSTITUTING SOLAR, THAT ONLY A CERTAIN AMOUNT CAN BE GENERATED OR SOLD TO THE GRID REFERENCING SOME RELATION TO THE CURRENT ENERGY LEVELS IN THE AREA. IT IS CONFUSING. 01:10:52 Mark Carlson: As owner of 75 acres in Marion County KS under wind lease, although now one mile west of the initial conditional use permit, I know there is global and sophisticated opposition to wind, bringing up everything but the kitchen sink. It was initially organized by MN-based National Renewable Solutions, recently sold to Orestad, and the name was changed from Expedition (Zebulon Pike moving through the area) to Sunflower Wind. It is about 200Mw. Another operating farm in the north part of the county is similar in size, and the purchaser of the energy is the Kohler Corporation. 01:11:44 Janet Farness: Birds are decimated by domestic cats. 01:12:37 Michael Holm: 500 million bird deaths from collision with buildings annually in the US 01:13:02 Dave Brauer-Rieke: To Lisa's point about land use and power plants there is also an issue with transmission lines - as in where they run. 01:13:04 Leslie Sand: Wow Michael, thank you 01:13:37 Sharon Samoska: Years ago when wind turbines were placed on a high ridge in MA near CT, people who lived below them complained of vibrations and noise in their homes. Is that a continuing issue: 01:13:47 Lisa Brenskelle: article form government: https://windexchange.energy.gov/projects/wildlife 01:13:53 Janet Farness: Outdoor cats kill 2.4 billion birds each year in the U.S. 01:14:01 Lisa Brenskelle: On impact of wind turbines on wildlife 01:15:23 Robert Errett He/Him: And the capital! 01:16:24 Michael Holm: Mining, pollution impacts and waste disposal are examples of externalities that are not properly captured in the cost of power generation . . . and fossil fuel industries enjoy the benefits from massive direct and indirect subsidies . . . over $5 trillion globally per year! 01:17:22 Sharon Samoska: OF INTEREST TODAY,ON SEMINAR IN CT, WE WERE TOLD WE ARE CHARGED FOR GAS PIPLINES TO SUPPLY GAS TO THE ELECTRIICAL PRODUCERS, AND NOT ONLY FOR OUR STATE OR OUR COUNTRY, BUT ALSO TO EXPORT OUT OF THE COUNTRY> That is very concerning and looking at it from an EJ view, it is concerning! 01:17:37 User: Q; Have rural electric co-ops been competitive and reliable on avg? 01:18:27 Mark Carlson: Sharon, there are regulations in many places regarding setbacks from occupancies. What is happening now with the quakes in OK and KS may be related to oil and gas drilling, especially fracking operations. Terry Tamminen “Live Per Gallon” describes the human cost of fossil production. 01:18:42 Sharon Samoska: In addition natural gas is not going to last forever and it has significant deleterious effect due to methane. 01:18:55 Robert Errett He/Him: Q1: Is green energy investment grade profitable yet? 01:19:37 Lisa Brenskelle: Another government source on impacts of wind farm siting: https://www.energy.gov/eere/wind/environmental-impacts-and-siting-wind-projects 01:20:29 Mark Carlson: Choose your poison: US natural gas exports to Europe (pushed by some Republican elected officials), or the pipeline from Russia? Surely there are other alternatives. 01:21:04 Leslie Sand: Our locally-owned bank hosts a virtual bank at greenpenny.com. All accounts at greenpenny are used to fund solar projects….I digress but related. 01:21:18 Emilie Bouvier (she/her): Here are the slides, if you want them right away! https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1zH_wCq5sQfMBuJIrXFYr0K1RpVB1k0Eaz85jXUkeb78/edit?usp=sharing 01:21:24 Lynn Perry: Thank you! 01:21:31 User: 👏 01:21:33 Robert Errett He/Him: Thank you for the great information. 01:21:37 Forrest Meyer: Thanks to Emilie and all! 01:21:45 Leslie Sand: Thank you for a great program! 01:22:07 Janet Farness: I've switched my investment to sustainable industries/issues/concerns and they are outperforming the nonsustainably based options. 01:22:12 Michael Holm: Amen! 01:22:14 Mark Carlson: CA is moving forward as a state with offshore wind development. 01:22:22 Henry Huntington: Thank you!!! 01:22:27 Dave Brauer-Rieke: Thank Emilie and Jack. Be well all! 01:22:28 Emilie Bouvier (she/her): Thanks everyone for the time! 01:22:36 Jack Hurbanis (he/him): Thanks everyone for attending!
